Maras

Maras: It is located towards the west of Cusco at an altitude of 3300 mts. (10824 feet); over a plain that in prehistoric times was a huge plateau, from which it is possible to observe the range of mountains of Urubamba including the snow capped mountains of Weqey Willka (today "La Veronica", 5682 mts., 18641 ft.) and " Chikon" (5530 mts., 18143 ft.).

Moray,is located 53 km from Cusco ( 1 hour by bus on the route Cusco-Maras), at 3385 meters above sea level.  It is about of natural gigantic holes, that were used to build terraces around them with their own irrigation aqueducts; what is outstanding is the difference of temperature during the year between the upper part and the bottom of the hole, which can be 15 degrees C different. The biggest hole is 150 meters deep and the terraces are 1.8m tall The terraces, built over retaining walls filled with fertile soil and irrigated with watered by complex systems allowed to grow more than 250 vegetal species. These terraces were used as Inca laboratories to make experiments with their crops.

Itinerary

We shall now proceed to pick up at their respective hotels about the 08:50 AM hour in that we will proceed to our bus to begin our full day of amazing destinations; at approximately 09:00 in point we will be starting our displacement up to our first stop the ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTER OF MORAY.

Moray ruins located at 3,450 m.a.s.l. we find the agricultural terraces with their complex system of irrigation and terraces. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning.

Our final destination are the salt mines which have been in use since Pre-Inca times. Water from a subterranean stream is channelled through pools where it evaporates and leaves behind pure salt crystals. With thousands of stark white pools stretching down the valley, the views are stunning.

Once finished the descent, which we made on foot, as the car cannot go there, we will begin the return to Cusco where we will arrive at approximately 15:00 why we would recommend going with a small snack.
