WALKING CITY TOUR CUSCO

Walking City Tour Cusco

The City of Cusco, at 3,400 m above sea level, is located in a fertile alluvial valley fed by several rivers in the heart of the Central Peruvian Andes of South America. Under the rule of Inca Pachacuteq (Tito Cusi Inca Yupanqui), in the 15th century, the city was redesigned and remodelled after a pre-Inca occupation process of over 3,000 years, and became the capital of the Tawantinsuyu Inca Empire.

The Imperial city of the Incas was developed as a complex urban Centre with distinct religious and administrative functions which were perfectly defined, distributed and organized. The religious and government buildings were accompanied by the exclusive abodes for royal families, forming an unprecedented symbolic urban compound, which shows a stone construction technology with exceptional aesthetic and structural properties, such as the Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, the Aqllahuasi, the Sunturcancha, the Kusicancha and a series of very finely finished buildings that shape the Inca compound as an indivisible unity of Inca urbanism.

SACSAYHUAMAN ON HORSEBACK

sacsayhuaman on horseback

Sacsayhuaman is a walled complex near the old city of Cusco, at an altitude of 3,701 m. or 12,000 feet. The site is part of the City of Cuzco, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

Sacsayhuamán is located at 4 Km north of Cusco, it embraces 3,000 hectares approximately, where a rich Andean flora and extraordinary Inca and Pre-Inca archaeological monuments as Sacsayhuaman, Kencco (or Qenqo), Puca Pucará and Tambomachay.

Saqsayhuaman is one of the most amazing Incan constructions for tourists. Its Quechua name means "satisfied falcon", it was the falcon that guarded the capital of the empire, since it was possible to overlook Cusco from the hill in where it was erected. If, as it is known, Cusco was designed with the shape of a lying puma, Sacsayhuamán would be its head, and the Coricancha would correspond to the feline's genitalia.

It is said that the work was started by Pachacútec and continued by Túpac Yupanqui, even though some chroniclers state that it was Huayna Cápac who gave it the final touch. Inca Garcilaso de la Vega says that Apu Huallpa Rimachi was the main architect, and that Inca Maricanhi, Acahuana Inca and Calla Cunchuy successively took control of the works.

We’ll tour Sacsayhuaman Fortress first, once the site of important battles between Incan and Spanish forces. It was laid out in the shape of a Puma’s head to which the city of Cusco provided the body, and the massive blocks used in the construction confound modern visitors- some are as big as a truck and more than 50 tons in weight, with the largest weighing 120 tons.

Afterwards we’ll continue on to Q’enqo (Labyrinth/Zigzag) an astronomical calendar and shrine consecrated to the Pachamama, the Inca earth mother deity, the nearby Temple of the Moon, Puka Pukara (Red Fortress), which appears to have been a military checkpoint guarding the entry to the ritual baths of Tambomachay (Resting Place), Tambomachay (Resting Place), the “Inca Baths” with its artificial waterfalls, canals, and aqueducts channeled through the terraced rocks.
After 03 hours of horseback riding we’ll begin the return to Sacsayhuaman along a route known as Zone X, along rocks naturally eroded into tunnels, some bearing Inca carvings. This area is a traditional site for offerings to the Pachamama and other rituals with pre-Columbian roots due to the widespread belief that it has a magnetized energy.

We’ll return to the city of Cusco where you’ll be dropped back off at your hotel

We shall now proceed to pick up at their respective hotels about the 08:50 AM hour in that we will proceed to our bus to begin our full day of amazing destinations; at approximately 09:00 in point we will be starting our displacement up to our first stop the ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTER OF MORAY.

Moray ruins located at 3,450 m.a.s.l. we find the agricultural terraces with their complex system of irrigation and terraces. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning.

Our final destination are the salt mines which have been in use since Pre-Inca times. Water from a subterranean stream is channelled through pools where it evaporates and leaves behind pure salt crystals. With thousands of stark white pools stretching down the valley, the views are stunning.

Once finished the descent, which we made on foot, as the car cannot go there, we will begin the return to Cusco where we will arrive at approximately 15:00 why we would recommend going with a small snack.
